Dylan has called this his best song. Written during the dissolution of his marriage to Sara, the narrative shifts between first and third person, past and present, creating a fractured, almost cubist portrait of a relationship.
Dylan re-recorded the song in Minneapolis just before release, giving it a more upbeat feel. He has continued to rework the lyrics in live performances over the decades.
